The Graceful Predator: A Closer Look at the Praying Mantis Design

Did you know there are over 2,400 species of mantises around the world? Here in France, it’s quite rare to spot one, but when you do, it's often the iconic Mantis religiosa, known as the European praying mantis. These creatures stand out, especially the females, which are typically around 7-9cm in size and a vibrant green. One feature that makes them recognizable is their black eye spots, which are quite striking.

One of their most remarkable traits is the ability to hear ultrasounds through a ventral ear—an ability that’s quite original amongst insects.

The mating process of mantises is equally fascinating, if not a bit tense. Males need to be cautious since females are known to be aggressive. Once a male spots a female, he keeps his gaze fixed on her, moving slowly from behind and pausing whenever she turns his way. Mantises can’t see things that don’t move, so this cautious behavior helps him avoid being attacked. Occasionally, males will sway gently, mimicking the movement of leaves in the wind—a subtle tactic to stay unnoticed and safe.

While many might find mantises a little intimidating, I’ve always been intrigued by their grace. The way they move and their delicate shapes inspired me to create a design centered around the praying mantis. I surrounded it with floral patterns that reflect its elegance and fluid motion. There’s also a small onion shape in the design—a subtle reminder of their sharp, precise nature.

I've explored different color variations of this design, and I’m curious—do you have a favorite?

The day I launched my shop, something special happened—I saw a mantis on my window. Seeing one in the wild is so rare that it almost felt like a sign that I was heading in the right direction.

If you love the beauty of mantises and enjoy cozy comfort, take a look at the hoodie I designed featuring this unique creature.
